Background

"Jeeper Creepers, it's Mothman." Mystery of the Iniquity.
N.P, 19 Mar. 2011. Web. 24 Oct. 2012.

The Mothman is a six to seven foot tall flying creature with red eyes and a wingspan of about ten feet. From Brad Olsen's Sacred Places North America, the unearthy entity was said to take
off stright up in the air without using its wings, and would chase
cars near the Chief Cornstalk Hunting Grounds, the location of an
abandoned World War 2 ammunition dump. Most of the sightings of the
Mothman occured through the years of 1966-1967 around Point Pleasant, West Virginia. There were many sightings of the Mothman at
first, but once the Silver Bridge collapsed in December of 1967, the
sightings died down. Some thought of the Mothman as a Fallen Angel
that came to warn them about the disasters that were to take place.
Whenever the collapse of the Silver Bridge occured, John Keel, "an
author who specializes in UFO phenomena, took the eye witness accounts and put them together in a book called The Mothman
Prophecies in 1975," which was later made into a movie staring
Richard Gere (Condon). Since then however, many people have still
reported seeing the Mothman around many places just before
destruction occured. As I have said before, wherever the Mothman
was spotted it was no surprise that destruction followed.

Conclusion

From what I have known in the past and what I have come to learn,
there is a possibility that the Mothman, in fact, exists. The
Mothman will probably go on to cause many unanswered questions, just
like any other urban legend. For the amount of people who have claimed to have seen the Mothman and give the exact same description of a six-to-seven-foot-tall winged man with red eyes and how they are spread out in multiple areas can't just be a rare occurence. Yet it doesn't stop there. Many of those who have reported seeing the Mothman have mostly all died suspiciously, many of which on the Silver Bridge. With all of the reports and truth found in the topic of Mothman, I would have to say yes, the Mothman does exist.

Evidence

Most of the
evidence that
surrounds the
Mothman are the
eyewitness
encountersThere
are a few
unexplained
pictures, but no one can be sure that they are the real deal. Since
the collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967 stated in the article by George Condon, there have been many reports of the Mothman just before and after many disastrous events. As said from the website Mystery of the Iniquity, there have been "many interviews in Chernobyl from those that said they saw a winged man-creature, right before the nuclear reactor disaster in 1986." Also, just minutes after the attack on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, observers reported seeing, "winged, flying men flying near both towers." Seen to the left is one of the most popular pictures that supposedly contains the Mothman. There are very few pictures of the Mothman, most of them being what people have seen and illustrated themselves.

Eyewitness Stories

Patch, David. "Collapse stirs memories of Ohio River tragedy."
 toledoBlade.com. N.p, 5 Aug. 2007. Web. 24 Oct. 2012.
There have been many eyewitness
accounts of The Mothman. Most of
those sightings having occured from 1966-1967.One of the first
sightings of Mothman was from
two couples. Mr. and Mrs. Roger
Scarberry and Mr. and Mrs. Steve
Mallet, both couples from Point Pleasant, saw a "large white apparition flying at high speed, following their car. They told a deputy sheriff it looked like a flying man with ten-foot wings and said it was about seven feet tall with large red eyes"(Aberdeen Daily News). A lot of controversy sparked whenever the 700 foot Silver Bridge collasped into the Ohio River on December 15th, 1967, killing 46 people, most of which being
eyewitnesses of the Mothman. Engineers said it was due to "metal
fatigue" (Corsaletti). Dick Thomas, a former newspaperman, had an experience with the Silver Bridge before it collasped that shook him. A few minutes after 4 o'clock on the afternoon of December 15th, he drove to Point Pleasant by way of the Silver Bridge. It was very strange because his car was the only car on the bridge at that time, and usually it was very busy. At 4:58 the bridge collasped into the river. There were many people that saw "flashing red lights around the bridge just before and just after it toppled into the river" (Corsaletti). There are many skeptics surrounding the controversial topic, but many say the Mothman was some type of fallen angel that tried to warn many of the tragic event before it manifested.

Proposal

Mothman

The Mothman is a legend known to many. The first sighting of the
Mothman was reported in Point Pleasant, West Viginia in 1966 by a
broken down TNT Plant. Yet some still to this day have reported
seeing the Mothman. The Mothman is supposedly a man-like creature
that stands six to seven feet tall and has a wing span of ten feet.
What captures the attention of most eye witnesses is the bright red
eyes it also posses. Growing up, my dad was always interested in legends such as the Mothman, but what intrigues me the most about it
is that whenever a sighting of the Mothman has been reported, something destructive has always happened. It is hard to say if I actually do believe in the Mothman, let alone any type of legend, but I would like to say it is quite possible for the Mothman to be true. Many sightings have been reported in different areas of the United States, each giving the exact same description, making it not just a rare occurence. Is it a legend or can it actually be true? This is for you to decide.
